The Priority of Prayer
As missionaries it can be tempting to give lip service to the priority of prayer while at the same time denying it’s power. We can think, “Sure, we would love you to be part of our prayer team…but, have you considered supporting us financially?” We believe God is calling us to think differently. We won’t shy away from the reality that it takes a great deal of money to go to Africa as a missionary, but we also want to live in light of these greater truths:
Prayer is the Power of Missions
God is a missionary God. He is building his church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it (Matt. 16:18). One of our main callings as Christians between now and eternity is to join God in spreading his gospel joy into all the world (Matt. 28:18-20). And prayer is one of the means he will use to accomplish this. John Piper writes,
“God has given us prayer because Jesus has given us a mission. We are on this earth to press back the forces of darkness, and we are given access to headquarters by prayer to advance this cause.”
God Owns the Cattle on a Thousand Hills
In other words, all the resources of the world are at his disposal (Psalm 50:10). Just this morning I read in my Bible about King David making sure his son Solomon had all that he needed to build the temple. After the people of Israel had joyfully given what was needed, David worshipped by saying, “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.” (1Chronicles 29:11–13)
If God has Called Us, He Will Provide
Which leads us to the conclusion, that if God has truly called us to fulfill his mission to take the gospel into all the world by planting a church in Nairobi, and if God truly owns all the resources of the world, and if prayer is the way he has designed to depend on him and accomplish all that he has called us to, then prayer is the most important thing we can be about.
We need Partners
God owns all the resources of the world, but he chooses his people to steward those resources. So while we are not going to make finances our main focus, we also know we need God to move people to partner with us through giving. Some of you may be led to give a one-time gift. But our biggest need is for people to support us on an ongoing basis (monthly, quarterly, yearly, etc.), which provides the portion we live on each month.
“O LORD our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own.” -1 Chronicles 29:16
