Home Assignment
On June 18, with RVA online and international flights in Kenya still closed, our family donned our masks to board a UK Embassy flight out of Nairobi to London. After spending the night in London we were able to forego the mandatory 14-day UK quarantine and fly onward to Minneapolis via Detroit.
So we are now back Stateside, where we will remain for our first Home Assignment, until the end of December when we plan on returning to Kijabe for the start of term 2. Apart from a couple trips to visit family, we will base ourselves primarily at Lilli’s parent’s townhome in Lakeville, MN (so grateful to Stan and Kathie for the opportunity to be here!). We would love to see you (of course in some social-distanced fashion) while we’re here. Please let us know if you’d like to connect!
Highlights of the Last Few Months
- Online school was more difficult than we imagined – but we were thankful Josh and Sophie finished well at Grandma Sue’s on July 10.
- Josh and Sophie both have their MN driving permits (watch out world!). They attended their 30 hours of online driver’s ed class from Kijabe, Nairobi, London, and Atlantic, IA. As soon as we arrived at our hotel in London Jonathan rushed to set up the computer in the Lobby (which was under construction) so they wouldn’t be late for class!
- We basically had the plane to ourselves on the flight from London to Detroit. There were probably 30 people on a flight that normally holds hundreds!
- The only family member who knew we were coming was Jonathan’s mom. The expression on Hannah and Tiana’s face when we surprised them by showing up at a park was truly priceless! Unfortunately we didn’t get pictures of it.
- After arriving in Minneapolis we drove down to the farm in Iowa to spend three weeks with Jonathan’s mom. It was a restful time where Josh and Sophie could finish up school, we could spend some time with Grandma, and eat way too much good food!
- Originally we planned for Josh and Sophie to travel back to RVA in August, and they would experience Term 1 as boarding students. However, since RVA is now online for the whole term, they will remain with us and do school online again.
- As we mentioned, our plan now is to return to RVA at the end of December for the start of Term 2. There may be some changes in Jonathan’s role as we go back, but won’t know for sure until the coming months. Of course COVID could always change our plans! Let me rephrase that – God could always redesign our plans according to his good and perfect will.
Please let us know when we can see you!
