Killer Hill

Because we don’t want to have coronaries during Coronavirus, it’s important that we find ways to get some cardio. Lilli and Sophie mainly make use of online workouts. I really don’t like formal workouts or lifting weights – and that’s putting it mildly! But…I must do something.

So I opt for the scenic route – a walk/jog around the RVA campus on what is known as the Guard’s Trail. It’s a trail that the security guards use to patrol the perimeter. It’s actually a beautiful route – with a view of trees, bougainvillea, an occasional group of monkeys (or baboons like yesterday, which I had to scare away with a stick), and incredible views of the Rift Valley below.

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

Psalm 121:1-2

But it also contains “Killer Hill”. It may not look like much from the picture, but at over 7,000 feet above sea level, and located toward the end of my circuit, it never seems to get easier. It slows me down, but I know it’s there for my good. I feel better after I arrive at the top – after my heart catches up again. And I’m sure it’s thankful.

I sometime dread Killer Hill, but I’m also thankful for it. It helps me to live.

This season has brought out some other Killer Hills in our lives. There are definitely some challenges I would rather avoid. The path to the top is hard, but the reward I know will be worth the effort. Let’s keep pressing on together, encouraging one another, and all the more as we see the Day drawing near (Hebrews 10:25)!

Hill Killers (Prayer & Praise)

  • Coronavirus cases in Kenya are still relatively low, 758
  • Today is Hannah’s last day of college at Bethel University – we are so proud of her! Also sad that we can’t be there to celebrate.
  • Lilli has had an irregular heartbeat that we had checked out this week in Nairobi. We’re thankful it’s nothing serious, but please pray it would get back to normal soon.
  • Please pray for Josh who has been struggling through much of this year, and online school has not helped. We are hopeful that some new strategies will begin to turn things around.
  • Kenya has been hit hard with lots of rain, which has meant flooding and mudslides. A recent mudslide near Kijabe threatens to take away the road which connects us to a major highway, another almost took out the railroad, and another took out a dam. So far no deaths in our area.
