Hidden Treasure

“yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.” –Proverbs 2:3-5

A couple weeks ago our family started to read through the book of Proverbs together. We take turns reading each chapter, share personal insights, and sing songs from Sovereign Grace’s Walking With the Wise.

Two things stand out from our first reading. First, wisdom that comes from God’s Word is precious. It’s more valuable than silver, gold, or jewels – or ice-cream, movies, or Instagram. It’s precious because it leads us to greater intimacy with God – to know him and respond in worship.

Second, we don’t get this kind of wisdom automatically. It doesn’t just come to us because we’re Christians. We are called to seek it like silver and search for it like hidden treasure. It takes work. You don’t look for buried treasure with a rake. You grab a shovel and you don’t stop digging until you find something valuable!

“Raking is easy, but all you get is leaves; digging is hard, but you might find diamonds.”

John Piper

I too often rush through my time in God’s Word, rarely digging, rarely lingering over precious promises until my soul is satisfied with true riches. Maybe this season is an opportunity – an unexpected gift to help me slow down and reorient myself to the Treasure that God’s Word reveals. I pray for an end to this virus, but I’m also praying you and I would make the most of the time we’ve been given.

Reflect

  1. Do I view the Bible as a treasure storehouse or as a book I’m required to read?
  2. In my Bible reading, have I been raking or digging? What is one small way I can deepen my digging?
  3. Do I read the Word to increase Bible knowledge or to see a greater glimpse of the Triune God?
