Rains in Africa

Fun Fact

As the always gloomy donkey once said,

The nicest thing about the rain is that it always stops. Eventually.

Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh

Rain is a good thing. It comes down from heaven to water the earth so things will grow and give seed to the sower and bread to the eater (Isaiah 55:10).

Unfortunately, in most of Kenya right now, there is too much of a good thing. Floods and landslides have displaced 17,000 people from their homes and killed 132 since October. The short rains are supposed to be over by now. Instead, some parts of the country are receiving anywhere from 2-4 inches of water each day. That’s around 200% more rain than average!

So far, though we’ve had an abundance of rain in Kijabe, there haven’t been any mudslides or other disasters. But for the sake of those in areas of major flooding, let’s pray that Eeyore’s words come true sooner than later.

Family Focus

  • The rain that has destroyed lives and homes and animals throughout the country has made things very green, if not also quite gloomy, here in Kijabe. Praise God for His provision and yet pray for those who are suffering.
  • Thank the Lord with us for a great first term at RVA! It has come to an end and all of our students have returned to their families. Pray for meaningful times together, refreshment, and fruitful ministry during this vacation.
  • Pray for our staff as they prepare for term 2. Our entire school (except for Kenyan staff) is run by missionary volunteers (supported 100% by people like you). This means that we must be flexible in our responsibilities each term, covering for a teacher on Home Assignment or a dorm parent that is still raising support. God has always provided just what we needed, but it often does stretch our staff in so many ways.
  • We are so thankful that both Hannah and Tiana have had the opportunity to visit us each year. Tiana will arrive in Kenya a few days before Christmas and stay for 3 weeks. It will be quite a long journey for her and we ask for your prayers things will go well and that she can get some rest. Hannah and Henrik will celebrate Christmas with his family in Texas.
  • Pray for Jonathan’s family, especially Sue, as they celebrate Christmas one year after Gene’s death. Despite the joy of the holiday season, the music, lights, decorations, presents, Advent also reminds us that we are waiting and longing for something, oh so much more than this. We await the return of our Savior King to make his blessings known as far as the curse is found!

  1. So enjoyed reading this. And your last sentence sent chills through me. Yes, we wait, and long. And Sue and I try to be there for one another as best we can……but I feel I fail her as I work each day……yet God brings us together to share our sorrow, and look for His joy. Blessings to you all this Christmas.

  2. Thanks for the note, Linda, and for being there for Mom. May Jesus meet you with joy in your longing and anticipation this Christmas!

  3. Merry Christmas to the Leslie’s from San Diego……it has been raining here in southern CA, and have thought of your family as we both transitioned to new homes fromMinnesota…..so glad to hear Tiana can join you, our Annaclare comes home from college in a week!

God Bless you all in Kenya this Christmas Season!
