Mashujaa Day
Fun Fact
“Live your whole life in spiritual reality rather than one week on a spiritual high” – quote from our Spiritual Emphasis Week speaker
Family Focus
A team from a church in Seattle, WA joined us last week for Spiritual Emphasis Week (SEW). Their theme was about keeping our identity centered in Christ. The last night we had about half the student body come forward for prayer or to help pray for their fellow classmates. Many put their trust in Jesus while others asked for prayer to continue growing in their relationship with the Lord. It was clearly a work of the Holy Spirit rather than a response to an emotional appeal. Pray for these students to find their satisfaction in Christ alone and to keep growing in Him.
Last Monday was Multicultural Day – a day we cancel classes and celebrate the incredible diversity we have here at RVA. It coincides with Kenya’s Mashujaa Day, also known as Heroes’ Day (“mashujaa” is Swahili for “heroes”). This is a national holiday in Kenya, which is observed to collectively honor all those who contributed towards the struggle for Kenya’s independence. We start the day with a program that includes a flag ceremony (think opening ceremony at the Olympics – only a bit smaller), playing games together as mixed grade groups, and the One World Run (5k) in the afternoon.
Our family is doing well by God’s grace. Hannah and Tiana are busy with school at Bethel and Bethany Global. We are so grateful they are close enough to get together and to even worship together most weeks. Hannah is observing in a classroom and will student teach next semester. Tiana just started working with the youth of their church in Mpls. Henrik is loving his role of meeting with international students at the University of MN. Sophie is doing awesome on the RVA varsity basketball team. And Josh is busy with school, friends, and learning to play the guitar.
