Boda Boda

Fact

A “Boda boda” in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania is basically a piki (motorcycle) taxi. They got their name at the border crossing of Kenya-Uganda during the 80’s and 90’s. Pikis were a cheap way to transport goods (mainly cooking oil, soaps and other consumer goods from Kenya to Uganda and second hand clothes in the opposite direction). They ferried these supplies and their people from border to border – thus, “boda boda”.

As with the items that are carried on a piki – if the number of passengers can fit and still make it possible for the driver to steer, then Hakuna Matata!

Family

  • Term 2 is over! Pray for safety for our hundreds of students traveling back to their parents’ places of ministry all over Africa or home countries around the world. Pray for sweet and intentional times of families being together, good times of ministry, fun, and growth in Jesus. Pray for rest and rejuvenation for RVA staff over the school break in April.
  • Mozambique – we have a team of AIM missionaries that have been working in Mozambique and went through the worst of Cyclone Idai. In the aftermath they were immediately taking care of around 300 people. We have a friend, Steve, working at RVA, but very familiar with Mozambique, now leading efforts to deliver supplies and help where needed. The situation there is dire – people still on roofs a few days ago, some dying in trees because help is coming too little too late. Pray for gospel-fruitfulness in the midst of rescue and relief.
  • RVA has just gone through a Cultural Audit with an outside organization that assessed the cultural health of the school in various areas. Overall the school is quite healthy, but there were some areas that were identified where changes need to be made. Change can be good, but it is rarely easy. Pray we would have the wisdom to change in the right ways in the right times, for the good of our students, our community, and the glory of God. Pray for good attitudes and a trust rooted in the gospel.
  • Pray for Kijabe, the area that includes RVA, a hospital, printing press, and theological school – We praise God for the opportunities that Kijabe has to share the gospel with many UPG’s in word and deed. We pray that God will continue to give us courage, wisdom and opportunities so that Jesus Christ will be known wherever we are.
  • Pray for Jonathan as he preaches in a local Kenyan church this Sunday and helps lead a transition workshop on Monday for RVA missionaries who are heading to their home countries or to other areas of ministry. During this month of break from school, Jonathan’s chaplaincy team will be getting together to do some vision and longer term planning, he will lead an Easter service for the missionary staff, and our family will be traveling for a week. We so desire our community to keep growing as people grounded deep in the gospel of Jesus Christ, not in our performance, not on moralistic accomplishments, but true freedom that comes from living out of the righteousness that we have in Christ.
  • We thank the Lord for the faithful prayer and financial support we have known for these 2 1/2 years. For the last several months we have been around $1,500 short of our support target each month. Pray that God would raise up the support needed to keep us on the field until our first home assignment, summer of 2020.
  • Pray for the Visa situation in Tanzania. Many missionaries aren’t able to return to their areas of ministry because their visas have been denied. Pray especially for a team working with the Alagwa people. The missionary team leaders haven’t been able to return and the rest of the team is struggling.
  • Praise God that Henrik, our son-in-law, returned safely from the Middle East.
