Blackrock

Fact

The Blackrock Rugby Festival or simply Blackrock is an annual school rugby competition held at St. Mary’s School in Nairobi, Kenya usually the end of May. It is claimed to be the biggest high school tournament in East Africa. The first tournament took place in 1983 and is now used by Kenyan rugby clubs to scout for new and upcoming players.

Last Saturday (May 19) the RVA campus became a ghost town as hundreds of students and staff traveled to Nairobi to cheer on the Buffalos, who entered the tournament as defending champions. Unfortunately RVA didn’t retain their title, but they did earn second place and more importantly, reflected the gospel and their school well!

Full disclosure – Lilli and I have never been to Blackrock – though two of our kids went. Fuller disclosure – I still don’t understand rugby! We did have an excuse as we needed to take a student to the doctor that day.

Family

  • Jonathan’s parents are still in Arizona while his dad recovers from complications from knee replacement. It’s been a long road to recovery! We just found out today that he also has pneumonia.
  • We’ve had rain almost every day since the start of term. We’re close to our average amount of rain for the entire year! The crops and our spirits need some sun. Hannah in Minnesota texted me, “how the tables have turned.”
  • Last week Jonathan was involved in several team building meetings with admin and his chaplaincy team. Pray that they would bear fruit and help them serve this school even more effectively for God’s glory.
  • Pray for Jonathan as he addresses the issue of loving each other with our words on Sunday.
  • Next weekend is Midterm already! So much to do. Pray for us as we stay busy with life at RVA, try to really care for these students, but also make the most of our time as a family – especially considering Tiana has only a couple months left in Kenya.
