Out Of The Clouds
Welcome back to Fun Fact Friday! We apologize for the few weeks of not receiving this bit of Kenya happiness in your inbox. Or perhaps you enjoyed the break! We’ll take this FFF to update you on what is happening around RVA.
Today begins the official start of Christmas celebrations at RVA. Since the students have only one week left before the December break, they get in some Christmas cheer before leaving. Tonight for “Class Night” with the eighth graders, we’ll be putting up and decorating a tree, making cookies, doing a white elephant gift exchange, and spending some time reflecting on the real meaning of Christmas – that our God took on flesh in Jesus Christ.
The high school band and choir will have their Christmas concert on Sunday evening. Then it’s a week of finals before the kids go “home” next Saturday until school resumes January 3.
This Sunday is RVA Baptism Sunday. Jonathan has had the honor of preparing seven students to take this step of obedience and faith. The whole school meets together at an outside amphitheater and baptistry where we will celebrate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the lives of these young people, as we listen to their testimonies, sing and pray together.
The Never Ending Election
Kenya had a redo election on October 26 that was marred by the main opposition pulling out and boycotting the election. Not surprisingly, the numbers voting in the repeat election were way down from the one that took place in August. There were isolated areas of violence, but nothing that approached the election of 2007. The result, again no surprise, was the same as the first election, Uhuru Kenyatta was the winner. However, there are currently three petitions before the Supreme Court against Kenyatta’s re-election. They are to rule on these within the next few days. A British MP familiar with the country has described Kenya’s election standoff as “total chaos”. That’s an understatement.
Please keep praying for the political situation in Kenya. The results affect real people trying to live their lives. Most are eager to move on and get back to some state of normal. Of course, as Christians we trust that a Sovereign God has His redemptive purposes in it all.
Have a grace-filled weekend. We’ll be back next Friday, Lord willing!
