Monkey Business

First of all, as you’ve probably noticed, we’ve decided to do Fun Fact Friday every other week instead of every single week. This has two advantages: it cuts down on the number of emails in your inbox, and it makes it a little easier for us to keep up, especially during the busy term. Hope you’re still enjoying them! Thanks to those who have written us comments by email or through the website.

This week we want to introduce you to some locals. Local wildlife that is. On the RVA campus we have three kinds of primates hanging around: Colobus monkeys, Sykes monkeys, and baboons. We don’t usually have any near our apartment since we are centrally located on campus, away from the forest. Those living on the perimeter, however, often wake up to monkeys jumping from a tree onto their tin roof and then onto another tree.

None of them are especially dangerous to humans but we’ve heard stories of staff coming home to a state of disaster only to realize too late they had left a window open for one of these unwanted local visitors. A friend recently told us of a time they walked in on a baboon hungrily eyeing bananas ripening in their laundry room. It took a little coaxing, and patience to get him out of the house again – and away from those bananas.

With what wisdom and creativity (and even humor!) God governs the world. We are thankful for each member of our Kijabe community, human and non-human, for the delight they add to our lives.
