Yellow Fever Trees

Rift Valley Academy is a place of amazing beauty, with so many unique plants and trees growing everywhere. We have a fellow staff member that has become somewhat of an expert on the trees, plants, and wildlife on campus. The other day I asked if he had any interesting facts about the flora and fauna here. This was one of his responses:

“On campus we have “Yellow Fever Trees”, aka “Acacia” (formerly a botanical name, but technically not accurate anymore). They got their name from the early settlers, who noticed that anyone living near these trees got “fevers” (often malaria). So they were blamed, but it just so happens that they usually grow where there’s lots of water, and where there’s water, there are mosquitoes.”
