Kijabe Climate

When we would tell people that we were heading to Africa the response was often, “Oh, isn’t it hot there?” It can be, just not where we are. RVA sits at about 7200 ft. on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, so it’s quite a bit cooler here than on the valley floor. The average temperature during the year is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. We are in the warmer season now, so most days since we’ve arrived have been in the mid to upper 70’s, with the temp dropping in the evening to the 50’s, usually accompanied by a good deal of chilly wind!

There are basically two seasons here, dry and rainy. We receive an average of 42 inches of rainfall per year with the highest in April (11.5 inches) and the lowest in July (1.25 inches). Normally the heavier rains come during the months of March-May and Oct-Dec, but we have been told by those who have lived here for a number of years that the weather has not followed the “normal” pattern.

I see that it is minus 9 degrees in Stillwater, MN right now. That’s an 84 degree difference from where we are now. It’s okay. I think we’ll adjust!

For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Whatever the LORD pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps. He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth, who makes lightnings for the rain and brings forth the wind from his storehouses.

Psalm 135 . 5-7
